Welcome Kitty

Kitty
This little Kitty has come all the way from Hanna in Sweden! Thank you Hanna, she is beautifully made and has taken up residence in the shed.
The shed which is bedecked with tulips (thank you to my Dad!)

which I have been enjoying while I made this on a sunny day because Ali gave me a box of old Beanos.

it is sitting in the greenhouse here - drying.
I have been making quite a lot of things lately as I have signed up to 'do' Art Tour. For the past 12 years Network has organised open studios all over the north east. Geoff has taken part for the last three and this year I have decided to open up the shed for three Sundays and share some of what I find so magical in there with Art Tourers!
There will be more about this, you can be sure!

As so often happens, the weather in Cumbria was wet and misty and grey. But I love that weather, Ireland can be like that too which is why both places are so wonderfully green.
Caroline's birthday gave us the chance to visit the town where the clothing is fearless

Do these socks count as fearless I wonder? (Opal Peacock)

If ever you find yourself in Cockermouth and in need of sustenance you'd do worse that eat at the Quince and Medlar where Robert treated the secret party to dinner.

No drive over the Pennines would be complete without a trip to the Watermill where our friends Nick and Ana have the most wonderful working mill and cafe.
Img_0121
Ana keeps sheep and dyes and knits the most wonderful things
Img_0122
It was all over far too quickly and I'm back at work again.
How did it get to be nearly May? This breast cancer charity walk is speeding up on me! I'll have to dig out the training schedule and discover how many miles I have to walk to catch up, I'm guessing it will be a big number.
I am reading 'The Naked Jape' by Jimmy Carr and Lucy Greeves and I can't resist leaving you with this....

a woman with a clipboard stopped me in the street and said 'could you spare a couple of minutes for cancer research?' I said 'Alright, but we won't get much done.'

Pastures New

Today I went to
Img_0044
which meant leaving
Img_0053
and going into
Img_0055
for a meeting about a weaving exhibition that is coming to Langley in June.
It's only about 40 minutes in the car, but I never go in that direction and it was like entering a different country! The fields are full of lambs and their mums, these only a few minutes old
Img_0068
Here in the North Pennines, the daffodils are still in full flower and all the other spring flowers are very much in evidence. These are my favourites
Img_0082
Tomorrow we are off to Cumbria for the weekend. Three counties in two days! I have half a sock to finish before we go - the birthday present for the surprise party girl!
Have a wonderful weekend all of you and I'll be back with a bit of Cumbria soon.

Finger Puppets

I left you last time with a hint of Martha's felt finger puppets. While I was rolling salami shaped felt sausages, she was creating finger shapes. We laughed a lot. She stuffed the partially felted shapes with plastic so they would hold their shape in the washing machine.
100_5859
She needle felted features and hair. The hair is scraps of fleece rolled with soap and hot water and rolled, and rolled!
100_5858
The colours are wonderful!
100_5866
I thought they were waiting for mouths and more features, but Martha thinks they are finished?
Love them!

How about some felt making?

I think felt making is a sunny day activity. It must be to do with all that water. And its a sociable one too. Some things are naturally solitary activities, but knitting and felting seem to me to be much more fun in a group. This weekend is turning out to be glorious and Martha the perfect companion. She has been experimenting with making finger puppets - more of that later - I have wanted to make some more 'beads' for a while now and here is the photo journey from fibre to felt.
I made felt balls last year, these beads are made like this.....

First, get yourself set up with a nice big flat surface, a few old towels, a kettle full of boiling water, some nice soap - I use 'wool soap', a bowl with cold water and some wool fibres. I use 'merino tops' from Wingham Wools - over there on my 'supplies' list.

As you know, wool will felt when it is hot, wet, agitated and soapy, so that's what were going to do. It also needs structure, so laying the fibres at an angle to each other works.
100_5825

Lay more colour in the opposite direction and keep stacking up them up like this until you have a soft pillow of fibres, about five or six layers deep.
100_5826

A bit of net curtain comes in handy now. Lay it over the top, sprinkle very hot water over and rub with the soap until you can feel that the fibres are all wet and soapy
100_5828

take the curtain off and roll up the stack like a swiss roll
100_5832

then roll and roll and roll back and forth - use more hot water and a bit more soap to keep it hot and soapy and feel it start to get firmer
100_5837

When it is all holding together really well, put it into cold water for a while. This firms it up even more. Then, stick it in the washing machine on a hot wash with some towels - the ones you were using! I made another with more layers - when they come out of the machine they are fantastically firm. Cut them into slices of varying thickness - this can be tricky - you need your biggest, sharpest scissors
100_5857

When they look like this you put them into a net bag and wash them in the machine again. This must be why you need good weather - to dry all that washing!
100_5860

then they look like this - very soft and blurry.
100_5869

That's that - I'll show you what I do with them when I've done it! But maybe you have plenty of ideas of your own?

The fund raising evening was a triumph on many levels. Everyone had a great time, I realised what a fantastic team us knitters have become and we made some money for our target!  To paraphrase Annie 'What's not to like?'

Enjoy your felting! Here is a glimpse of Martha's work..... more later!

Camera Help Please

One of the knitting group was asking me about cameras the other day, she wants to buy a new one and is a bit overwhelmed by the choice. I thought you lovely bloggers would have some good recommendations for her? She wants to take great pictures but not break the bank! What features do you enjoy using on your current model or what is the camera of your dreams and why? You can either email or leave a comment and I will pass your thoughts on. Many thanks.

And speaking of knitters, let me tell you about the Wonderful Knitters of Hexham and our latest project. It involves making these
100_5464
and training, not to knit but to walk. Nine of us are going to Edinburgh in June to walk the Moon Walk for Breast Cancer. We have signed up for the Half Moon - 13.1 miles - which might be a gentle stroll for some people but is starting to fill me with dread the nearer it gets!

We are holding various fund raising events, the first is this Friday evening when the lovely Caffe Nero, where we meet every week, have agreed to stay open late and let us run amok with sponsored knitting, lucky dip, tombola and whatever else we collectively think of to raise money. It starts at 6.00 pm and goes on until we have reached our target .... no not really .... until 8.00 pm. Anyone who is anywhere near Hexham on Friday 13th should come as it is going to be .... well .....wonderful!

Of course most of the people reading this will have an excellent excuse not to come on Friday, largely to do with huge stretches of land and water. Never fear! we have set up a dedicated bank account to receive donations.

Nat West Bank, Battle Hill, Hexham, Northumberland, UK

are primed to receive cheques of all sizes into the account called The Wonderful Knitters of Hexham (of course)

I always write that in bold for some reason and now I have said that, I am aware that I say it in bold too!

Wish us luck!!

Easter Egg Rolling

Every year, we walk up the hill opposite our house and roll decorated eggs down it. We've done it for years - since the kids were babies. Whatever the weather and whoever is visiting - off we go. This year was the most low key ever as there were only three of us and it was hastily done between being busy and going out, but it was unthinkable to have Easter without it.

Martha won, if you count 'least damage to egg' as winning. The only time anyone ever got their egg down to the bottom of the hill intact was when Owen was two in a backpack on my back and he held his egg in his hand all the way down.

Happy Easter!

Home from a wonderful week in Norfolk. I will create a Flickr set to contain all the photos as there are more than any reasonable post requires. But when were my posts ever reasonable?
Here to complete the set is my picture of the best morning ever
100_5756
Check out Wendy and Zoe for the same picture but with slight variations of people!
Yet again, I am in no doubt about how much I love this Blog Community. Where else could you meet up with people you have never met in person and have a full-on four hours of non-stop chat and laughter. Thanks to Zoe and Wendy for organising themselves to come for this morning and Sophie and Martha for joining in what may have been an unfathomable amount of blog gossip at times.
Ours was the sort of conversation I love to eavesdrop on. Three faintly mad women (sorry W and Z) knitting, drinking coffee, talking and laughing. With gifts too!
100_5782
the wools are two I have never knitted with before, so looking forward to that and Wendy's little card and fabrics.... I will quilt some of the Anna William's quilt with the silk, if I can bear to use it.
The daffodils are lovely too - an all round warm, friendly morning which I hope to do again if ever you venture this far north?

Norfolk was also all about John
100_5486
He is working at Kingswood but he got some time off to spend with us. It was nice to spend time exploring the coast with him. Poppy enjoyed it too.

100_5597

100_5575
she liked the cottage we rented in Blakeney
100_5682
Not sure whether she minded being tied up outside the churches while we looked inside? Though I'm sure the daisy chain collar helped.
100_5636
This is the door into Cley church.
100_5761
Geoff likes to get up early so she walked miles with him. I get started a bit later in the day so she usually got in a few more miles with me. There are some glorious walks along the coastal path.
100_5747
I could go on doing this all day. But later today I will find time to get that Flickr set posted. But now I have to go and sort out the chocolate for Easter!
Have a happy one everyone.

Watch out that you pay for your car if you park in Wells-next-the-sea

can't work out how to get the Norfolk Flickr album onto my side bar - see if this works
